How to avoid developing Mary Sue characters?

I need some help, everybody is always complimenting my writing. I have won awards and contests, but I am not content. I do NOT mean to sound full of myself, by the way. Here comes the but, but I don't think my characters are genuine. How do you make your characters the EXACT opposite of Mary Sues? How do you give something to the world that no one has given before you?
