Who comes first - partner/spouse or children? And Why?

The real reason I am asking this is because I have been reading M&D on YA for over a year now. This question has come up many times, but I am asking it in a different way because I have seen how the answer differes between men and women. Men alway ALWAYS answer "my kids", while women almost always answer "my partner/spouse". I am a woman and a mother, and my answer is my son. That's just how I feel. But I am really curious as to why this answer is otherwise so completely opposite among the genders. Can you answer the question, and give your reason why your kids or your partner/spouse comes first? And a question to the women (and men) who make your partner/spouse priority over your children --- how do you feel when they in turn give their children more priority over you?
